4. SCHOOL ARRIVAL & DISMISSAL

All students will enter and leave the building under adult supervision. The following procedures are to be followed when entering and leaving the building each day:

-All bused students will enter and leave the building through the front MAIN entrance at 8:45 AM and 3:35 PM.
-All supported education students using special transportation will enter and leave the building through the front NORTH entrance outside of Room 107 at 8:45 AM and 3:35 PM
-Students who walk to school will enter and leave through the following entrances to the building- SOUTH front, SOUTHEAST back, NORTH front, and MAIN front - whichever of these entrances is in closest proximity to their route to school. Students will not be allowed to enter the building until 8:45 AM. Students walking to school should leave the building through the same doors.
-students arriving via private day care transportation are to enter and leave the
building through the front MAIN entrance at 8:45 AM.
-students being dropped off by private vehicle will use the pick-up/drop-off lane at the north end of the building by the faculty parking lot off of Grassmere Rd. for both student arrival and dismissal purposes.

Please be informed that no adult supervision will be provided on the playground prior to
8:45 AM. Therefore adjust your child's departure time so that upon arrival at school they can immediately come into their classroom area.

Kindergarten Arrival and Dismissal Procedures:
-AM kindergarten students arriving via private vehicle will use the above mentioned pick-up/drop-off lane at the north end of the building by the faculty parking lot.
-AM kindergarten students walking to school will enter the entrance described above that is in closest proximity to their route. Please note however that the SOUTH front entrance is closest to the kindergarten classrooms.
-AM kindergarten dismissal will be through the SOUTH front entrance only!
-PM kindergarten students arriving via private vehicle will use the front circle entrance (this will allow for adult supervision of both the bus and parent drop-offs)
-PM kindergarten students walking to school must enter the building through the SOUTH front entrance for supervision purposes
-PM kindergarten students will be dismissed from school using the above mentioned dismissal procedures for both walkers and those students using the drop-off/pick-up lane

Fry staff supervises the students as they board the buses or day care vans as well as those students that are walking. Adult supervision is also provided for those using the pick-up or drop-off lane. All drivers are urged to remain patient with others in line and the adult supervisors on duty.  PLEASE DO NOT CUTOFF OR DRIVE AROUND ANY VEHICLE AHEAD OF YOU. STUDENT'S ARRIVING/LEAVING DURING REGULAR ARRIVAL AND DISMISSAL TIMES ARE TO ONLY USE THE DESIGNATED PICK-UP AND DROP-OFF LANE.

Upon entering the school building at 8:45 AM students are to go directly to their classroom door and line-up in an orderly fashion under the supervision of a staff member.  NO STUDENTS are to enter or leave the building through the multi-purpose room doors or the middle back entrance. All students will enter through the MAIN, NORTH, SOUTH front or back entrances.   AT NO TIME IS ANY STUDENT OR PARENT TO WALK ACROSS THE FRONT CIRCLE DURING THE ARRIVAL AND/OR DISMISSAL OF FRY STUDENTS. No Parking areas are clearly marked by yellow paint on the street curbs.

A crossing guard will be provided at the intersection of the front circle drive, Tall Grass Drive and Sunburst Lane. Students are to walk only on the sidewalks directly surrounding the building when on school property.

A bike rack is provided at the SOUTHEAST corner of the building. The school assumes no liability for student bicycles left in the bike rack. It is suggested that students provide their own locks for protection of these items. Once on school property students MUST get off their bike and walk it to the bike racks. Students are not allowed to ride their bikes while on school property.

Even under the most miserable weather conditions, the following of these safety procedures will result in a safe and orderly beginning and end to each school day.

All Fry students are to respect the private property of homeowners, including their lawns, when walking or riding their bikes to Fry School.

5.  EMERGENCY PROCEDURES
ILLNESS OR INJURY>-In the event of illness (fever, vomiting or other severe symptoms) or injury to your child the following procedures will be followed:

Contact the school nurse
Provide immediate first aid/care as needed
Contact or attempt to contact the parent
If parent is not available, contact the person listed as “emergency contact” on health card
Contact family physician, if both the parent and emergency contacts cannot be reached
As appropriate contact 911
Please be sure to update your “Emergency Information Cards” throughout the school year when changes are made in phone numbers (work & cell) or in the designated contact person. This is very important for the welfare of your child.

ALLERGIES
Food allergies can become life threatening. The risk of accidental exposure to foods can be reduced in a school setting if the school works with the parents, students and physicians to minimize the risk and provide a safe educational environment for food-allergic students.

If your child has a food allergy it is your responsibility to notify the school nurse and the classroom teacher in written form. Due to the ever-increasing number of food allergies it is imperative that all necessary emergency interventions and information be made available to school personnel.

In children, six foods cause almost all allergic food reactions: Milk, egg, peanuts, wheat, soy, tree nuts (walnuts & pecans). Although the most prevalent are allergies related to milk and peanuts. If your child suffers from a food allergy you are asked to:

Notify the school nurse
Work with the school to accommodate your child’s needs
Replace medications after use or expiration
Educate your child in self-management of the allergy

Symptoms of an allergic reaction could include but are not limited to hoarseness, throat tightness, wheezing, chest tightness, a tingling in the hands and/or feet. Such anaphylactic reactions can occur very quickly and in rare cases can cause death if not addressed immediately.

Students with a peanut allergy should avoid the following ingredients: artificial nuts, ground nuts, cold pressed, expelled or extruded peanut oil or arachis oil, peanut butter, and peanut flour. Food allergy is a serious condition but by working together all students can stay healthy.

TORNADO
A sufficient number of emergency drills are held during the school year to familiarize students and staff with the warning system and evacuation procedures. Our school is equipped with a radio warning system to receive severe weather bulletins from the local Civil Defense agencies. Evacuation procedures are posted in every room of the building. Fire drills are periodically staged throughout the school year. Occasionally the Naperville Fire Department will be present to monitor our evacuation procedures.

FIRE
Fire drills are practiced routinely throughout the school year when weather permits. Evacuation procedures in case of a fire are posted in every room within the school building. At times during the school year the fire department will supervise such drills for their effectiveness.

BUS EVACUATION
A state mandated bus evacuation drill involving all students, including those students that normally walk to school, and staff will be conducted in both the fall and spring of the year. The Student Services Coordinator and transportation company will determine the dates and times for these drills.

CRISIS RESPONSE TEAM
The school has an emergency crisis response team in place should a catastrophic emergency or situation develop that affects the entire school and/or community. The purpose of this team is to provide all available resources to the students, staff and parents when dealing with such an incident. Possible events could include but are not limited to death of a staff member, death of a student, national security breach, intruder within the building, gas leak, etc. This team is responsible for interacting with law enforcement agencies, district personnel and resources while maintaining an orderly environment in this time of crisis.

6. STUDENT ATTENDANCE, VACATIONS
-Students and their legal guardians must officially reside within the boundaries of District 204 in order for school-age children to attend a District 204 school. Proof of residency is required for any student when enrolling for the first time. It is also required when a change in address occurs. Fry’s educational programming is based on the premise that regular attendance and punctuality are vital to a student’s success in school. The student who is frequently absent misses social interaction and classroom discussion/instruction that cannot be duplicated. Each day that a student is absent from school or in the case of a prolonged absence of more than one week, a parental call must be made to the Fry Attendance Line at (630) 428-7402. You are asked to provide the following information:

Child’s name
Classroom teacher
The date of the absence
The reason for the absence
Failure to follow the above procedures will result in a phone call from school staff inquiring as to the whereabouts of your child. If the illness is interpreted as being contagious, readmission to school will only be made through a physician’s note. However, if the child is well enough to attend school it is assumed that the child is well enough to participate in the normal daily activities of the class.

Please note that when a student arrives at school after 9:05 AM but before 10:00 AM the student will be considered "tardy." If a student arrives after 10:00 AM but before 12:00 PM the student will be considered "absent for 1/2 day." The classifications are outlined in the Indian Prairie School District 204 Parent/Student Handbook.

7.  BICYCLES, ROLLER BLADES, SKATEBOARDS AND SCOOTERS
Students may ride their bicycles to and from school. Due to the large number of students that walk to and from school and for the safety of all we ask that bicycle riders when arriving on school property get off their bicycle and walk it to the bike rack. And when leaving we ask that they not mount their bicycle until they are off of school property. Bike racks are provided and located behind the southeast and northeast corner of the building. It is highly recommended that those students riding their bicycle to and from school wear a safety helmet at all times. The school assumes no financial responsibility if the bicycle is lost or stolen while the student is at school. Furthermore, due to the possibility of serious injury, the size and value of roller blades, skateboards and scooters, coupled with the inability to appropriately store and secure them within the classroom, they are not permitted at school.

8. BIRTHDAYS
Birthdays, including half-birthdays for those whose birthday does not occur while school is in session, are recognized during the morning announcements. Each of these students will be presented with an office present - a birthday pencil.

Please do not expect school staff (office staff or teacher) to distribute personal invitations to any individual birthday celebration (party). That is your responsibility as a parent. It is inappropriate to send or provide your child's classroom with a birthday "treat" due to the increased incidence of food and dairy allergies . Such an activity might also disrupt the teachers instructional focus.

Specific addresses and phone numbers cannot for confidentiality reasons be provided by any school personnel.

9.  BOOK FINES
Students who lose or misuse textbooks and/or LMC materials will be charged an additional fee based on the extent of damage and the value of the item. Reasonable wear is acceptable, but fines will be imposed for excessive wear or damage. This also applies to library books.

10.  BUS SAFETY
The following bus safety rules are to be followed by Fry students anytime those students are on board a school bus. This includes when being transported to and from a school sanctioned field trip.

-Students will get on the bus in single file fashion
-Students will keep the aisle clear of their feet, books, bags, and lunches
-Students will immediately find a seat once on board the bus
-Students will stay seated while the bus is moving
-Students will talk quietly with their friends while on the bus
-Students will never put their heads, hands or arms out of the window of the bus
-Students will never throw items while on the bus
-Students will not talk when approaching a railroad crossing
-Students will at all times obey the bus driver's instructions

District 204 does not own its own school buses. As such the district contracts all transportation services out to Laidlaw Transportation Company who is responsible for the securing of driver personnel, scheduling of bus routes and general bus maintenance. Should you have any individual questions concerning issues related to the above please call Laidlaw at (630) 904-0900.

BUS VIDEO CAMERAS
This notice is to advise you that the School Board of Indian Prairie School District 204 has adopted the use of video cameras on all school buses used to transport students. Student behavior and the bus driver's management of the bus are two key elements to a safe and enjoyable bus ride. This program involves the installation and utilization of a video camera to record the behavior of the students and the bus driver's methods of student management. Issues involving the safety of all on board the bus will also be recorded.

Parents are asked to reinforce with their children the aspects and importance of proper behavior while on board a school bus.

11.  CUSTODIAL PARENT ISSUES
Information and appropriate court paperwork regarding custodial parent issues must be on file with the school. Such documentation must be dated and signed by a court representative. In the case of multiple-documents the most recently dated document will be enforced. The responsibility of providing such documentation is the responsibility of the custodial parent. The school will not become involved in any custodial parent issues. Therefore, it is inappropriate for a parent to seek input from the classroom teacher to be used against the other parent. We request that both parents assume responsibility to resolve any issue that might impact the education of the child. If contact is limited between an individual parent and a child, it is the responsibility of the custodial parent to have such limitations documented and on file in the school’s office.

12.  DAY CARE INFORMATION
If your child is to be transported to and from school by a private day care provider, it is necessary for the school to have written notification from you stating your child’s name, the name and telephone number of the day care provider, and what days the child will be transported by said provider. When there is a change in these arrangements you must notify the school and day care provider.

13.  DISTRICT 204 HANDBOOK
Indian Prairie District 204 provides a parent/student handbook that contains information pertinent to the entire school district organization. This handbook is given out at the beginning of each school year. Please refer to this when seeking answers to District 204 Policy issues.

14.  FIELD TRIPS
All student field trips require a signed permission slip from a parent or guardian. Parents will be asked to sign one field trip permission form for any/all field trips taken during the school year. Any cost for the field trip should be returned to school with your child in a sealed envelope marked “Field Trip.” Any child that chooses not to go on a school-sanctioned field trip will be provided alternative school activities in the building.

15.  HEALTH AND IMMUNIZATION RECORDS
The School Code of Illinois states that each student must have on file a:

-Health examination signed by a physician
-An immunization record in accordance with the Illinois Department of Public Health requirements. District 204 Policy states that every new student entering school in District 204 must present documentation of the required immunizations and a completed health examination within the last year. Such documentation must also be presented by all students entering kindergarten or first grade, fifth grade and ninth grade.

Required immunizations include:
-DPT -Mumps
-DT -Rubella
-Polio -Measles
-Hepatitis B Series (3 separate immunizations)

If you have any questions about these items please contact the Fry School nurse.

16.  LIBRARY MEDIA CENTER (LMC)
Our LMC is integrated into the curriculum and is central to the learning process. The LMC is a service center for all students with a computer lab located within. Students have the opportunity to learn about and effectively use the resources available in the computer lab and LMC as well as choose personal reading materials. Access to the internet must include a :

-Signed parent permission slip (AUP) on file with the school
-Staff supervision
-Curriculum related project
-A secured site authorized by the District

17.  LUNCH/RECESS
-

Allotted Time

Grades 1-5 are provided with a 35-minute recess/lunch period daily. Here at Fry School the breakdown of recess and lunch are as follows:

15 minutes recess
20 minutes lunch

This time allotted is consistent throughout the District and has not been an issue in past years. However, please remind your child that while socializing is an expected part of the recess/lunch period, it is imperative that they get their food, sit at the table provided and begin eating their lunch. After lunchroom routines have been established seating during lunch is the choice of the student. However, until those routines have been established, seating is by classroom teacher.

Hot Lunch

Students have the option of participating in the District 204 “Hot Lunch” program provided by Sodexho Corporation. All students have an established debit account that can be used once advanced payments have been received. Students’ current balances will be transferred to the new debit system. The price per meal is $2.25. A minimum of 5 meals at a time may be purchased when paying by check or money order. Simply multiply the number of lunches you want to purchase by $2.25.

Your payment in the form of check or money order can be sent to school with your student any day of the week. Please allow 4 days to process. Checks or money orders may also be mailed to Indian Prairie Food Service, 1665 Quincy Ave. Suite 143, Naperville, IL 60540. Please include on the check or money order your child’s name, school and grade. Credit card payments can be made via the Indian Prairie School District Website at www.ipsd.org, or through your school web site. VISA and MasterCard are accepted with a minimum purchase of $25.00 and a service fee of 5% of your transaction. A reminder envelope will be sent home when your student’s balance falls below $10.00. Please check out the web site for more details and further directions on how to “PAY for MEALS”.

All students are expected to sit in a safe and appropriate manner throughout the lunch period. Students should get their food items, pick up a milk and straw if needed, and proceed to the table and begin eating with their peers. Students who require assistance with food items should raise their hand and a lunchroom supervisor will assist them. During lunch students are not allowed to leave the lunchroom without permission. Should a student need to use the restroom they should get approval from the supervisor prior to leaving. At the end of the lunch period all trash is to be gathered and discarded by the individual students. It is not the responsibility of the lunchroom supervisor. Students are to walk at all times when in the lunchroom.

Recess Conditions

All students are expected to go outside for recess unless otherwise indicated by weather conditions (rain, severe storms). Students will be going outside provided the wind chill is above 0 degrees. Decisions are made based on the information provided by the local weather service. It is not uncommon for these conditions to change during a recess/lunch period. When such changes occur an administrative decision will be made. It is important that students come prepared to go outside for recess each day. Appropriate clothing items are needed and are expected. If a student wears a particular garment to school it is expected that said item would also be worn for recess.

18.  MEDICATION OF STUDENTS
If your child will need to have medication administered during the school day (either prescription or over-the-counter with a doctor's note ), it is important that you review the policy concerning medication in the District 204 Parent-Student Handbook .

If there is any change in your child's health which affects his/her ability to take physical
education, or if he/she is placed on medication or has a change in medication, it is the parents responsibility to provide written medical verification.

No cough drops or throat lozenges are to be taken by students or dispensed by school staff to students.

Administration of medication by District 204 personnel is contingent upon the following regulations:

1. The student's physician must provide written orders to the school specifying
the student's name, the medication, the purpose of the medication, the correct
dosage, the time the medication is to be administered, any side effects and an
emergency phone number where the physician can be reached.

2. The student's parent or guardian must request in writing that the school district comply with the physician's orders.

3. The medication must be brought to the school's main office in a
pharmaceutical container labeled with the student's name, name of the
medication, the dosage and all pertinent instructions. A maximum of one (1)
week supply of medication may be sent to school any time. The container
should be sent home with the student at the end of the week.

4. The school must store the medication in a locked cabinet.

5. The school must maintain a written record of any medication dispensed. Such
a record must list the student's name, name of medication given, the time
it was administered and by whom.

6. The student's parent or guardian must renew the written orders for continuing
medication at the beginning of each school year, whenever the medication or
its dosage is changed, and when asked to do so by the school nurse.

19.  NUTRITIOUS SNACK

The items listed below are considered to be appropriate food snacks for students. The provision of such snacks is the responsibility of the parent and not the school. A “snack time” is provided to students on a daily basis to help them get through their day. This time is designated by the classroom teacher and does not interrupt instructional time. The school in no way is promoting any specific item on the list below but rather is providing you with items that we consider appropriate:
Juice boxes
Fruit Cut up
Vegetables
Pretzels
Multigrain snacks
Crackers
Raisins
Snack stix
Snack ‘ums
Teddy grahams
Yogurt

20.  PETS
No pets of any kind are to be brought to school. Safety from animal bites and allergic reactions to a variety of animals must take priority. It is the responsibility of the pet owner to control their pet when brought on school property during student arrival and dismissal.

21.  PHOTOGRAPHIC GUIDELINES
From time to time your child’s photograph may appear in local or district publications or even on the Fry School web site. These publications can include newsletters, yearbooks, professional journals, videotapes and/or brochures. If you do not wish to have your child’s photograph appear in any of these items, you must notify the main office in writing. In the absence of such written notification on file, the school will not limit the use of your child’s photograph.

22.  SCHOOL COMMUNICATIONS

A variety of regularly scheduled communications are used to keep parents informed about the Fry community. These are the means by which staff, administration, PTA and District 204 will communicate with you:

Letters from Administration
Grade level newsletter
PTA newsletter
Fry School web site
Parent/Teacher conferences
 Progress Reports/Report Cards
Voice mail
Email
Additional informational items, community announcements and school schedule reminders will be sent home as appropriate. A message board in the school’s main lobby also is kept up to date on a monthly basis. It is also very important to go through your child’s backpack for informational items/reminders. Please take the time to read thoroughly any items brought home from the school or sent by the classroom teacher. Please contact the teacher if you are missing items or have questions or concerns about items you receive.

Back To Fast Facts Table Top Of Page

23.  COMMUNICATING WITH FACULTY - All faculty members have individual phone numbers, with voice mail, that are appropriately distributed to their students and parents (these numbers are not published on our web site). The main purpose of these phones is convenience in communication between staff members throughout the school and district, and between staff and parents. This system is not designed to meet immediate needs or serve as a link between parents and students. Therefore, those needs should continue to be directed to the Fry office. Written communication is also still appropriate in certain situations. For example, notes regarding early dismissal should still be sent by parents. If your message is informational in nature, or you have a question for a teacher, simply call the teacher’s number and leave a message that includes your name, concern, and phone number so that we may respond as promptly as possible. Since ringers will be turned off during instruction, it is appropriate to call during the school day. However, messages will not be checked until after the students’ dismissal or possibly the next morning depending on the individual teacher’s schedule. Therefore, any need that must be met during that particular school day should be directed to the office.
